What do Harry Potter, Dracula, and Gandalf all have in common? They all have memorable names.
Naming characters is a difficult but important part of the writing process.
After all the names you choose for your characters will largely affect how memorable they are.
So understanding how to craft unique and meaningful names is a must-have skill.
We want to create memorable names that contribute to reader engagement and character depth.
The Impact of Names
The power of names begins with a curious psychological phenomenon known as the name-letter effect where studies show people have a subconscious bias for the letters in their own name.
The way things are named and the people around us influence our perceptions in small but impactful ways.
Names are not merely labels for people they are meaningful communications of the object’s value for yourself.
Different names and sounds can create biases as they become associated with atrocities (Such as Hitler and Stalin) or cultural naming.
But what does this mean for our writing?
Well, the way you name your objects in your writing forms the initial subconscious impression of a character just based on their name.
It shouldn’t be a means for alarm but there should be some conscious thought put into what you want that impression to be.
1) Cultural and Historical Context
The first thing to consider when naming your character is the environment they are in.
If your writing is set in the 1800’s you’re going to see Charles, Elizabeth, and Margaret, whereas if your novel is set in the present day you’re going to see more Oliver, John, and Jenna.
The setting is very important for how your naming should be considered.
Consider the norms of your world and the labels you definitely want to avoid to craft your best names.
2) Symbolism and Subtext
In the intricate art of storytelling, names serve as more than mere identifiers—they become potent tools for weaving symbolism and subtext into the narrative tapestry.
- Naming Through Symbolism:
- Characters, much like symbols, can encapsulate deeper meanings. Uncover how selecting names laden with symbolic weight can add layers of complexity to your storytelling.
- Foreshadowing Through Names:
- Dive into the subtle dance of foreshadowing by choosing names that offer glimpses into a character’s fate or the unfolding plot. Discover the nuanced art of hinting at what’s to come.
- Thematic Significance:
- Names can serve as thematic anchors, connecting characters to broader motifs within your story. Explore how the right name can echo and reinforce the overarching themes you wish to convey.
- The Power of Subtext:
- Names, when wielded with intention, become vehicles for subtext, conveying emotions, motivations, or hidden facets of a character’s persona. Unravel the subtleties that can be embedded in the very letters of a name.
3) Memorable vs Forgettable Names
Names become a balancing act between leaving a lasting imprint and seamlessly melding into the fabric of the narrative.
Memorability is most often created from a unique character that comes to be associated with that name.
For example, Karen.
Karen has become a name associated with short-tempered angry older women.
The name Karen didn’t initially come with this meaning it became memorable because of the actions of those called Karens.
Memorable names should harmonize with the essence of the characters.
A horribly violent villain named Bubbles is a mismatch between the name and the essence of the character.
This ‘rule’ can be ignored in horror I see that a lot, things such as Chuckles as a murderous clown.
Those are the 3 biggest things to consider when naming your characters.
In Conclusion . . .
We’ve delved into the profound impact of a character’s name on reader perceptions, the contextual richness offered by cultural considerations, and the layers of symbolism and subtext that names can contribute to a narrative.
Names should not be mere labels; they are intentional notes in the symphony of your story.
Beyond identification, a character’s name shapes the emotional journey of readers. They become threads woven into the fabric of engagement, influencing how characters and stories carve themselves into the reader’s memory.
As you embark on your literary journey, remember that in the realm of storytelling, each element contributes to the alchemy of reader connection.
May your character names be more than words; may they be vessels of meaning, guiding readers through the enchanting worlds you’ve crafted.
