Optimization of this space can work wonders for your creative process.
Have you ever tried to write anything in a busy room? There are televisions on people on their phones everywhere it’s so loud. Nothing of any worth gets done here.
THAT’S how important your writing space is for your productivity as a writer.
In a world designed to captivate your attention with ads and meaningless content, constructing your environment is a breath of fresh air from the chaos you are forced to endure.
In the following post, you will find practical strategies to design a distraction-free writing space for optimal focus and productivity.
Optimal Physical and Digital Setup
First of all, when designing your writing space, it needs to feel comfortable. A place where you would be happy to spend hours of your life.
This means you want to have a well-lit space. If you lack access to natural light a little desk lamp unique to your writing space will add comfortability as well.
Similarly, it has to be clean. I don’t care if you think having a dirty room increases productivity. Having a cluttered space is the equivalent of having 20 tabs open on your computer. It is just extra stress you DON’T need.
Clean your space.
You also want your digital space (or your writing tools) to be clean of distractions as well. This means not having access to social media. I don’t think it’s a particularly hot take to say social media is designed to keep you consuming.
If you consume social media before you write, there will almost certainly be a sort of fog over your concentration. This is because you’re fiending for more dopamine, which often makes you skip your writing in favor of doom-scrolling.
To avoid this you could either turn off your access to the internet or simply get an app blocker like Cold-Turkey.
A clean space is a productive space.
Atmosphere Matters
I highly recommend infusing some motivational material into your writing space that motivates you to keep moving forward to achieve your goals.
Motivational elements could include inspiration boards, images of your finished products, or the awards you want to receive with your writing.
Personally, I have a system called The Bottle Cap Economy in which I reward myself with bottle caps in a jar, the jar sits above my desk where I write, so if I ever stray from my writing I see the jar and get instantly motivated to keep writing.
Having inspirational quirks in your writing space is not essential but can be highly effective if implemented.
During your writing times, you also need to set boundaries with anyone who lives near or around your writing space. Make sure you tell these people of the importance that you are not to be disturbed when writing. You can remind these people of the boundaries set by having signs or objects around your writing space which means it is your writing time.
Also in creating an ambiance conducive to writing in your writing area background music or ambient sounds can be a great tool.
This may not work for everyone, some people may favor peace and quiet but personally when I sit down to write I have a playlist that has backing tracks to movies such as Lord of the Rings or Black Panther that get me hyped to write.
Similarly, if you want ambient music I highly recommend a fella called Cosmo Sheldrake I love playing his most recent album “Wild Wet World” which is an ocean ambiance album that is absolutely spectacular.
Music can add extra motivation give it a go.
Prioritize Ergonomics and Troubleshoot Distractions
You’re gonna (hopefully) be spending hours of your time every day at this space so it’s best that it is physically comfortable.
Ensuring you have ergonomic (designed for efficiency or comfort) furniture will make sure you have a comfortable seating experience for extended periods of time.
Ergonomic furniture can be pricey but it’s definitely worth the purchase in the long run, especially for your back.
Also, to protect further from physical strain make sure you’re taking regular breaks and stretches if you are spending long stretches of time at your desk, this will refresh you both mentally and physically to do the best writing you can possibly do.
That’s all we’re trying to optimize for here.
Your writing space will not be the best fit for you the first, second, or even tenth time you use it.
What is most important is that you keep changing and optimizing your space so you are more and more productive each time you sit down.
By the 5th or 6th time using your space, you will have a good idea of the distractions that tend to get you and make sure that you can plan for those as best you can.
